“If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn’t need to lug around a camera.” ~Lewis Hine
Taking photographs is like telling stories. Sometimes we’re relating the stories of those we know and love. Other times, we’re inserting ourselves into the lives of total strangers, telling their stories the way we think they should go. One of my favorite places to do this is on the New York City subway. Almost 700 miles of tracks winding beneath the most populous city in the U.S. layered with countless people, each with their own unique story.
It’s become a passion of mine to capture some of these moments, to insert my version of life into each situation.
I’ve seen stories of love…
and family…
and joy…
Of daydreamers…
Multi-taskers…
And those in deep conversation…
Whose stories have you told lately?

It’s amusing to see people lost in their own world, but in such a public place.
yes lynne, often times it is very amusing!
first, dear Christy, you started with a quote by one of my favorite photographers and then WHAM into your beautiful, moving, mournful (oh that woman with the bags) and joyful images of life! magnificent captures all!!! xxxooo
Linda, thank you so much for your kind words. That woman with the bags had to stay in color instead of getting my usual B&W conversion.
I adore your subway stories photographs. They are what first introduced me to your work on IG. It’s really beautiful to see them together like this. I’m so glad you shared them here.
Thanks so much Deb!
such wonderful captures!
Thanks Cara 🙂
These are brilliant, Christy! x
Thanks Kirstin! I’ve never really shared any subway shots here before so I thought, why not?
I’m with Debra – I adored your early subway photographs too. So much to be captured in those small moments. These ones are wonderful.
Thank you Kim 🙂
love this christy, so many amazing images up there! you have a way of capturing the mood of those moments so well.
Holly, thank you so much 🙂
I love, love, love these…makes me want to run away to the city in hopes that one day you’ll take my picture too.
So many stories here…fantastic work!
I missed this post while I was out camping… but am so glad to see it today.
I LOVE these, each and everyone for their own reason.
I want to live in a big city….
Excellent! I can almost smell the subway too 🙂 I love how there are so many different lives and stories passing each other by in the subways.
