Portals are as much about time travel as they are about memories, particularly those doors from childhood connecting faraway places or worlds. Episodes of the original Star Trek and Lost in Space immediately come to mind. So does C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia and Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass. As I searched through old film scans last night, these images from my swimming pool project represents a portal into my past. The pool contains an entire catalog of childhood memories. These images in particular represent a particular stage in time’s passing. Not in a remorseful sense, but one of acceptance.

What about you? Have you captured any memory portals this month?

I love the idea of photography as a memory portal – and it just goes to show once again how powerful a medium it is we’re working with. Thank you for sharing, Nikki!
