An arctic chill lingers. Earlier this month it blew in from Canada and decided to camp out, not only in the northeast but across the country. Freezing temperatures. The natural world caught in ice. Hibernation days.
It’s not all bad. We’ve had birthday celebrations with dinner out and cake in, kitchen science experiments (apple cider vinegar: three ways), and a quick photo adventure down by the river an hour ago.
I’m sitting in the living room, dressed in wool, still cold. It was worth the short trek through the icy splendor where I felt as I stepped near the slip of arctic water.
Geometric patterns left from a storm or two past. Circles eddy beneath the surface. A careful pitter patter step to the river bank. Lucky for me, I made it without falling through.
Can’t say the same for the pack of instant film I shot. It didn’t actually sink underwater but the images, even with a diffused flash, were lost in a sea of white. Too cold to recover or fully develop. Lovely for what they are.
Then I shot these images before my mobile camera lost power.
Just in time.

These are splendid indeed – gorgeous monochrome work Nikki! For myself I can’t wait for the world to gain some colour again 🙂
So bleak, but so magnificent at the same time.
My thoughts exactly !
Winter certainly carves out the abstract bares bones of the landscape – which you’ve captured so well, Nikki! Crazy, bitter cold where I live, too. I’ve been out a little with my camera, but it’s been tough.
Wow, that looks COLD! Its boiling where we are. Can’t imagine it ever being that cold. Thanks for the photo’s, they are so beautiful. Sam
