Lately I have been thinking about how there is so much more to food than physical nourishment. Cooking and eating is a feast for all the senses, and feeds the mind as well as the body.
Take our sense of smell; why are scents so emotional? The scent of fresh-ground coffee makes me happy for some reason even though I don’t drink a lot of it, and when I smell fried bacon I am instantly transported to the lazy Sunday summer mornings of my childhood by the seaside, when my grandmother fried eggs and bacon for us for breakfast.
Or take our sense of touch, which grounds us in the present moment. It is surely impossible to remain unhappy when pounding a bread dough into submission, and who has not enjoyed the sensual pleasure of a soft-skinned peach?
And as photographers, we know all about translating these intangible enjoyments into the realm of the visual.
A simple orange on a green plate makes for a perfect antidote to the grey weather (Oslo is approaching a record number of overcast days in January and February this year). The orange juice went into this cake, together with other interesting ingredients like honey, vanilla tea and walnuts. Yum!
Below are only a few of the mouthwatering images I found in the Mortal Muses Everyday Beauty flickr pool. I would love to see your food images as well – feel free to share a link to an image of yours in the comments!1. Rhubarb & Coconut Flapjack on Plate, 2. Sun Shine, 3. ~ All the best from Jenny.
Such enticing images. They certainly are a feast for all the senses, and an encouragement to make this evening’s meal.

Will you be cooking something good this evening? I’m trying out something new – chicken with cilantro, sumac (if I can find it – I recently learned that it is frequently used as a spice in the Middle East) and lots and lots of garlic 🙂
That cake looks so good and now you’ve got my belly grumbling.
Yay – mission accomplished 🙂
Thanks for featuring my rhubarb & coconut flapjack image Jenny. Orange, vanilla tea, honey & walnuts sounds a delicious combination for a cake!
My pleasure; the flapjack just looked so yummy 🙂
Love this Jenny! And I agree, cooking IS a feast for all senses!
Thanks, Holly! xo
