Earlier this summer, I set out on a mission to try as many expired films as I could possibly get my hands on. This little project was part technical: I wanted to see how expired films behaved based on brand, age, and how they were stored, but it was also part philosophical: the not-knowing and element of chance involved with expired film appealed to me. Another thing that appealed to me about expired film was the search for it! I stayed away from eBay, and lead myself on somewhat of a film scavenger hunt. I found it in thrift stores, antique stores, and best of all, had film donated to me by friends and family. I’m happy to say that I have acquired well over 100 rolls of film this summer, and spent only about $15 total over three months – thank you Janelle, Erin, Georgia, Cara & Michael!
While expired film may not be for everyone, I think that when you love it, you love it! I know I do. From the grain, to the often wild/wacky color shifts, to the sheer enjoyment of letting go and embracing the fact that you do not have 100% control over your final image.
Here are some of my favorite shots from the summer, with the type of film listed in the description:

In love. With expired film. Your photos. This post. So good.
I love the double-exposed shots. I’m assuming you did that on purpose? 🙂 My sister gave me a film SLR she bought on eBay, and neither of us knew if it worked. When I shot my first roll, they all came out double- and triple-exposed. It was not what I was going for, but many of the images were really fabulous.
Wow! Big love!
Great project. I am now intrigued with finding old films as well.
The fact that you are a great photographer enhanced your results . Thanks for sharing.
I Love Film Always Have! Gorgeous Pictures:)
Where can you look for old expired film? I live in the midwest and I have a difficult time finding them.
Any suggestions of where to look?
Wow, thank you all so much for your kind comments – this totally made my day!!!
Mony – the film that I have found has either been in Goodwill stores, or antique stores. If you do not have many of those near you, I would suggest trying http://www.shopgoodwill.com or, of course, eBay. With both of these sites, you would need to check daily to find the best deals, but you will find plenty of expired film, especially on eBay!
I love your work so much! I’m always inspired when I see what you are doing, and honestly, I’m rarely inspired these days. Everything you do has such soul.
Love. All. Of. This. Much.
