In my mind it feels like early August not early September. My tomatoes are heavy with fruit finally ripening for the first time this season. Green clusters of chilies cover my plants but aren’t yet changing color. And the flowers are a vision of orange, yellow, purple and pink dotting our landscape with their cheery blooms. Were it not for the garlic chives blooming back there, I could convince myself that summer is still in full swing, instead of starting to wane.
Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds. – Regina Brett
With the shadows lengthening and the light fading, I find I want to hold onto these final days of sunshine and warmth as tightly as I can. To lay back, close my eyes and savor the warmth that remains. To squeeze out every chance I get to sink my toes into thick green grass. To sit outside late at night and remember that there are stars up there somewhere even though I live in the city.
So even though autumn lurks in the shadowy future, I’m holding on to summer as tightly as I can.

It’s hard to believe summer is on its way out! The time went too quickly (though I must admit I am ready for fall. Pumpkin pie and wearing boots! Yay!)
it did go fast!!! usually i’m ready for fall to start but with the cooler summer this year, i can wait. BUT i’m always up for pumpkin pie!!!
I am so ready for boots and big bowls of soup, too!
Yes I agree. Everyone else seems so ready to move right on to fall. Everything in due time. Soon enough those same people will be tired of fall. Don’t rush time, savor it.
Mostly I refuse to start wearing jeans. There are two seasons in Western Washington, summer and grey. Grey and cool last forever. for me, it is just keep on with this fine produce.
I love summer…love love love summer, but fall is my season. I love the crisper cool air and the colors of fall and all the beautiful golden light. It makes me happy!
I love the opening photo here so much!
And now – off to check out your photography course. Sounds like something that will be right up my alley!
I am in total denial that it’s already the start of Autumn! x
Here in Coastal Georgia, it’s not us holding on to summer, but quite the opposite. As much as I love beaches in the summer, I’ll happy to have some cooler days for beach walking. I do wish we could keep the longer days though.
