One of my strongest instincts as a teacher is to help people figure out what it is they want to say with their photography, and also to help them remember that they aren’t alone – that I always have their back.
Personally, though, I feel completely lost with my own photography at this juncture. I find myself at a fork in the road, without a teacher/mentor to guide me.
That’s the real world, though – right? I used to operate on my own just fine without input from any type of mentor figure. Being in grad school, though, made me grow accustomed to feedback and guidance on a daily basis. I am doing my best to sever my need for feedback from other people, and to begin to rely on myself again.
It’s a slow journey back to the land of the self-sufficient.
Have you ever been in a weird limbo like this?

Anna, as I am 75, I might not count. But I think it is really hard to figure out what you are doing and come up with a philosophy without feedback. Particularily with the whole world doing photography, Nikki’s class is wonderful as everyday I got feed back. But normally I am unsure what I am saying. But I do love the feel of the click. Your picture today was perfect for the post.
Last night I had class that only meets 3 times in 3 months to encourage, inspire, share work and prepare for gallery shows/portfolio reviews.
A few key statements that were said throughout:
-accountability
-make work
-edit work
If you can come back in one month with only one fabulous image – that will be wonderful. Sometimes we are the toughest critics of ourselves.
“help people figure out what it is they want to say with their photography”… I love this statement you made . Its a good reminder for me to think about what story i’m trying to tell
Weird limbo? Yes. Solution? I have no idea. Usually I find that if I keep shooting, one day I’m in limbo no more.
