It was one of those early autumn afternoons when the sunlight hid behind a uniform layer of clouds threatening to rain. I thought to myself, surely a grey day like today is perfect for taking photos to be edited in black and white.

I don’t know what had gotten into me, because images shot in flat light will – of course! – turn out flat whether edited in colour or black and white. Correspondingly, after the sun came out – and it’s stayed out for weeks now, and it’s been glorious – my black and white images, as well as my colour images, pop the way I want them to.

So this was a wake-up call for me, a reminder of one of the basic True Things of our craft, for which I am grateful. What is your most important True Thing of photography these days? Tell us in the comments!
