I have a confession to make: as much as I love 35mm film, I have never – until now – taken an interest in all the different types of 35mm film out there. Call it laziness or call it practicality; my local lab mostly stocks Fujicolor Superia 200, which is reasonably priced and gives good results, so that is what I have been using.
This summer, in the spirit of exploration, I loaded my Minolta with a roll of a film brand I had never heard of before: Tudorcolor XLX 200. The other day I got the scans back from the lab. My first reaction was that I love the vividness of the colour tones with this film.
The blue tones are perhaps especially striking, from dark to light blue with every shade in between:
However, red and green tones turn out equally well:
At this point I wanted to know more: who produces this film? Is it possible to get hold of more of it? After some googling, I find various forum discussions and a couple of reviews. I haven’t been able to verify any of this, but here is the information I have been able to dig up about Tudorcolor: it is said to be cheap, of good quality, and made by a now supposedly defunct company.
Finally, the most interesting piece of information of all: Rumour has it that Tudorcolor is a rebranded version of Fujicolor Superia. If this is true, no wonder I like this film so well!
Now I wonder which brand to try next. Give me recommendations in the comments – I would love to hear what your favourite 35mm film brand is, and why!
~ All the best from Jenny.
these photos are gorgeous jenny!!
Thanks, Christy!
If you like vivid colors, then Kodak Ektar 100!! Here’s some on my ektar stuff: http://tinyurl.com/n6b6whr
Nice set here, and I especially LOVE the 2nd one, with the nail. Nice work!
Thanks for the tip and for sharing your images! I keep hearing good things about Kodak Ektar – would be interesting to try next.
These are so wonderful Jenny! I have a soft spot for Ektar.
Cool – another vote for Ektar. Thanks, Kirstin!
These are absolutely gorgeous Jenny. The colours and tones are fantastic. What a great find and of course wonderfully made by you.
Lynn
Aw, thanks Lynn! I do so love it when a roll of film turns out that well – that doesn’t happen all too often 🙂
This image collection is so beautiful, Jenny! The tones, oh the tones . . . I like Ilford Delta 3200 (bw) and Kodak Portra 800 (color) as my go to low light films.
Thanks, Nikki! Low light films are going to be very relevant once winter hits properly… I did shoot Ilford at one point – though 120 film – but that came to an end when my lab stopped processing it.
These are gorgeous. I experiment with different film stock often, and am developing a mental list of favorites for times of year, day and subject matter.
I can’t pick favorites, but since no one else has suggested it, slide film is extraordinary for color. Fuji Provia is my current favorite.
Oh yes, slide film is absolutely on the list of what I want to try!
