On December 31st, I took my final 365 photo of the year. I had done it, I completed a year of self portraits– with exception of a handful of days, I had used my DSLR to capture each image. I was incredibly proud, but also incredibly relieved to be done with the process. When I woke up on the first of January and felt like I was missing something. I went almost all day and finally figured out it was because I hadn’t taken a self portrait. I found my favorite light in the house (which happens to be in the master bathroom against the sliding glass shower door). I opened up the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone and shook to randomize the film and lens combo. When I woke up on January 2nd, I was getting ready in the morning and shook again. The light bulb went on; I had my project for the year. I loved the simplicity of this project. I didn’t have to think too much, I had a location, I had the app doing the combo mixing, and all I had to do was show up and click.
Then I started to be mentioned in other people’s images on Instagram. Fellow photographers had picked up on the idea of shaking and shooting. I was thrilled. It always seems that when I attempt to create something for everyone to join in, it doesn’t really catch on. But much like the surprise of each shake, this 365 was like wildfire. And look at this (small) sampling of the work you all are doing!
There are now over 65 people shaking it with me this year. Some are only shaking on Sundays, some every day. Some are mixing it up when the mood strikes. I have babies, puppies, and yes, even men joining in the shake. I have a couple of people who are very unsure of the self portrait, so they are shaking it up by capturing still life and landscape images. I absolutely love all the variations that are occurring.
If you don’t have an iPhone, don’t despair, you too can play along. There are a couple of apps for your android- vignette, fxcamera, or retroid. Either way, make sure you share with us out on Instagram by tagging your images with #shakeitout2014
Shake, shoot, share – Vanessa
It’s been my favorite new tag of the year! So much fun! Thank you for letting us all play along!
I absolutely LOVE to hear that Kendra!
I adore this project . The way it’s catching on in the Instagram community just makes me smile. Big. x
Kirstin, thank you so much! I hope I can get you to shake at least once this year. xo
Loving this project. It’s one of the few things I’m finding inspiration and time to do once in a while with new baby on my hands! Thank you.
That is part of why I love it too, the easy and the amount of time (hardly any) it takes to shoot the image is perfectly simple. Glad you are finding inspiration in it!
hope all is well with you and that sweetness!
AWE-SOME!!!!! xo
no you are!
so cool!!!!
Thanks for the love, Linda! xo
I have seen so many do this but this is the first time I have seen it explained. Thank you. Now I shall have to think if I want to go back to using Hipstamatic. It looks like a really fun project.
Do it! I would love to see yours. And I am glad all the pieces finally fell together on the story behind the shake 🙂
Such a fun project. Participating in this lessens my “fear” or “self doubt” about “selfies”!! I don’t feel alone, this is becoming quite a fun little community to be part of! I don’t shake it out every day… The mood has to strike me, and I like that… I’m not ready to be that disciplined in “self portraiture” as to take a shot of me everyday. I’ve got enough “every day” stuff going on..OR that SHOULD be going on!! LOL Thanks Vanesssa,,,this project rocks!
That is something that warms my heart. I am glad the project is helping you push through the fear and self doubt. So glad you are joining in on the movement!
I’m so grateful for you shaking me by the shoulders (figuratively? literally?) to get some serious inspiration rattling around this noggin of mine.
And I am LOVING where you are taking your version. It’s amazingly beautiful.
Thank you for choosing one of my shots!! 🙂
I love the quiet calm of this one. Thanks for shaking with me.
I love this! I find hipstamatic a little overwhelming–trying to figure out which lenses and film combos work best in any given situation. I always end up shaking! When in doubt, shake!!
I am playing along most days with my android, but really felt like I was cheating a bit, because I had control over the final photo. I tried almost all my apps. Then yesterday I discovered the app Pix. Pixel Mixer.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.net.daum.pix&hl=en
I shoot the photo with my stock camera, than take it into Pix where I go into filters and hit the randomizing button. Then I move to the next button, which will add a texture or light leak and hit randomizing button again. I never know what I will come up with. I feel like I am really shaking it up now.
Thanks so much for this fun project Vanessa!
Thanks for sharing this!!! Love hearing the work around
I love this project. It was an absolutely brilliant idea Vanessa!
Cheers,

Love this! I have loved watching this grow in my instagram feed. Wonderful idea. Joined in today.
How awesome, Vanessa!!! Following this project with a lot of excitement and may even shake it out with you sometime 🙂
Your prompt project opens up a safe platform for me to explore and experiment with Hipstamatic and it’s various combos…I used to only shoot with my favorite….but now I shake, rattle and roll with it it…and share it because of you. Thank you…and thanks for including me in this feature post!! xoxo
so happy to read about your idea here so happy to be joining you this year. And now you have me addicted to the app. I had it for so long and never really knew how to use it much. Now I can’t get enough of it. Much love to you friend. I really enjoyed the read.
